1) How does the notion of reinforcement strike you?
Reinforcement is use by many people to change a behavior or to be sucessful in something. Everywhere and almost everything we do uses some reinforcement, such as in the school setting, daycare center, at work or at home. On a regular basic we all reinforces on ourself or someone else. For example, getting a child to pick up themselve, losing weight, or have self-esteem. Reinforcing can be use to help all the following to make us feel good.
2) Do you see it as useful?
Yes. I think that it's useful because it works very well. When I want to change a behavior or have someone to be effective in something, reinforcing them is a useful tool to use. It doesn't harm them and at the same time they feel good about it.
3) Do you sense any limitations or problems?
I think there are limitations to reinforcement. If you continue doing it, it can become a problem. If you continuing using it over and over the reinforcement will no longer work. Also, sometimes when you are trying to reinforce a certain behavior the result or outcome of it may not be what you expect. It can either be a good thing or a bad thing. Depending on what method you use the consequence of it may also make it difficult for you to reinforce someone's behavior or your own.
4) How have you seen it work in your life?
I have seen reinforcement work with friends, family members and myself. It's seen to me that at times we all do it without knowing we were using reinforcement. For example, my mother was uneducated but she uses reinforcement a lot. My brothers are the normal typical adolescents who thinks that being with their friends are the only thing. In getting them to stay home most of the time she tells them if you come home and stay home and finish schoolwork I will take you shopping to buy whatever you like. Normally it's clothing and video games but it works. Whoever doesn't follow doesn't get to buy new things. I have seen my siblings more at home and when they are not at home to usually negotiate with my mother. I use reinforcement on myself too. I'm a hard working person and most of the time I don't get to relax. I stated early in our introduction that I uses a calendar and highlighters to be organize, will I know I'm busy alot I set once a week a time for myself to relax and do what I want. I feel good and I don't become grumpy or bossy.
5) Does it happen without notice?
I believe reinforcement plays a big role in our lives as a way of learning. We don't have to be educated or have knowlegde of it but I believe that it comes naturally to everyone of us and we did have more notice of reinforcements we really know what we can do or understand why we reinforce.

I too believe that reinforcement is just a natural function of us as humans, and it happens every day whether we are aware of it or not. I agree positive reinforcement is key with children. Do you have any techniques in particular that you have used and it worked? I'm always looking for new ideas!
ReplyDeleteOhh, Yes. I have try alot of technique with my little toodler to get her to change a behavior. For example, she loves to go to McDonald's. So, if we were at the store and she starts to want everything she sees, I'll let her know I'll take her to McDonald's if she behave. After, I see that she behave, I take her to McDonald's and treat her to some fries or apple dippers.
ReplyDeleteI also agree. When you use positive reinforcement, I believe you just adapt to do the things you are getting rewarded for. It eventually just becomes a lifestyle. I also use the McDonald's thing with my 3 year old, and it does work. I think it works great :) I need help with a technique with a six year old who can't behave in school. We have tried everything....any suggestions for that one?
